Hey, everybody! I just released the beta version of my new scavenge map, Escape From Parkdale. You can download it here. The map was created for the World of Level Design's 11-Day Winter Mapping Competition. If you're interested in the development, there's a forum thread that follows the process here.

Hmm... haven't played it yet, but a few critiques from looking at the screen shots.

1. A little undetailed, buildings seem a little too blocky
2. Snow everywhere. This would make sense I suppose but I think there should be just a little less.. try patches of melted snow in areas
3. Kinda bland. It's not on the fail chart, but it's not quite on the win chart either, add more visual noise, streetlights, architecture, dead bodies, military presence, lighting.

Overall, not bad, just needs a few new things and it's good as gold, brother.

I saw this on the other forum. I love the lighting. One thing I would suggest is a custom texture on a brush ring in the 3d skybox to simulate thick fog (snow) on the horizon. Take a look at some of the other maps. It hides the low res skybox textures on the sides, and creates a seamless transition from fog to z-clip.

The lighting is so perfect, just needs a bit more detail overall.

It looks very peaceful and calm...strange for a L4D2 map :lol:
but yeah just a bit more detail will perfect it.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, there's a ton of things I still need to do to this map, but there's only so much I could do in 11 days... Haha. Definitely the 3D Skybox needs work. I've seen how Valve does it, but didn't have time to figure it out for the beta. Same goes for hiding the safe room door. Definitely needs more props as well, especially at street level. More things for infected to spawn behind, etc. I'll be doing a lot more work on the buildings, too. Who's kidding who, I'll be doing a lot more work on everything... But I think overall I'm happy with it for a map that was built in 11 days.

Lol. Hmmm. I guess 'cause you're filling the generator with gas to run the radio attached to it to call for help so you can escape from Parkdale... That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :D

*EDIT* Parkdale is the area of Toronto I live in... Eventually, there'll be a CN Tower in the skybox.

Alright! Beta v2 is out! Also created a Steam Group for the map that will hopefully help with testing. The Beta v2 is not available on the official l4dmaps.com page, as they only allow the upload of .vpks... To get this working until Valve fixes their issues, you need to put the map files in your maps folder manually. In any case, there's a readme file in there with instructions to follow. So, it looks better, plays better, and it actually works! You can join games through the lobby system properly, and nobody crashes and burns. Haha!
